Almonds Florida (cov) and Alaska (cov)

On November the 29th, 2022, the presentations of the 3rd MEETING OF FARMERS were held in Fraga at the facilities of Agrostock Group (Huesca-SPAIN).



Very interesting and professional discussions were held thanks to the speakers, farmers and technicians who were present. This event is described as creating a real place where top-level professionals in the almond sector can broaden their technical an d economical knowledge to debate the present and closest future of this crop.


Íñigo Vargas (Crisolar) did a presentation about almond marketing. Presentations were also performed by Jesús López Alcolea and Pepe Egea from the CEBAS-CSIC, internationally renowned researchers and disseminators.


Among others, two new soft-shell almond varieties FLORIDA VOC and ALASKA VOC were presented. These varieties are currently edited (Breeder CEBAS-CSIC/SPAIN) by International Plant Selection SARL.


They are self-compatible varieties with a seed yield of around 50%. While Florida Cov (Nonpareil or Marcona season) is early flowering, Alaska Cov (flowers a few days before Penta and Makako) is extra-late. Both have a high production and their seed is attractive.


Florida presents an extra-early maturation (few days before Antoñeta) and Alaska intermediate (similar to Ferragnes).


These varieties obtained in Spain intend to fill have better yield than varieties with the same typology of American origin.
