Carmingo® range in South Africa

09/02/2022

4 of the late varieties in the Carmingo® range are commercially planted in South Africa. Despite the hail, the 2021-2022 harvest is exceptional.

"Interest in this range is growing here", testifies Michael Oosthuizen, International Plant Selection referent in South Africa. "Some farmers plan to completely replace their apple orchard with apricot trees of this range, the economic balance sheet is much more interesting". The balance sheet is even more interesting than plums,  which price can fall easily, since a producer can earn up to 11.5 euros extra per 5kg box with an apricot harvest. The apricots will mainly be exported to Great Britain.

Michael is planning future plantation of early maturing varieties, (November), notably the Carmingo® Mediabel variety. The Koo valley, in which the Carmingo® varieties are mainly planted, has a climate adapted to late varieties with sufficient cold hours. This is a great business opportunity for farmers in this region. Trials of varieties requiring less cold hours are underway in the Barrydale and Ladysmith region.

South Africans are also very satisfied with the Rubyngo® range, in particular for the exceptional taste qualities and the good post-harvest behavior of the fruits.
